LAKE LANIER
Lake Sidney Lanier is a 38,000-acre lake created when Lanier Buford Dam was built in the 1950s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This man made body of water has 540 miles of shoreline. Millions of visitors each year enjoy recreational water sports provided by the lake, easily accessed from Atlanta via several major highways. The lake was named for favorite son Southern poet, Sidney Lanier.
The Lake sits halfway between the authentic Appalachian art and heritage of Georgia's mountains and the urban city center of Atlanta. Five Georgia counties share the Lake: Hall, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Lumpkin and Dawson which offers many recreational options including water sports, museums, golf, galleries and plenty of shopping.
